Rode this in June 2010. A fun road that my mate and I turned around and re-road a few sections for the fun of it! As you come of the mountain and pass the lake look out for the police who wait in the lay-by on the straight just hoping youll open your throttle.

This road has some fabulous sweeping haipins, some straight and changing scenery. At the Santander end the climb up the Mountain is good fun that my bike pals repeated it 3 times. You then, towards the Burgos half, drop of a huge escarpment into a Valley and the Red Injuns will be lined up on top(probably on 125cc Suzukis). Good bike route.

Great road. Lovely. Gets cold in winter. Some snow through high sections.

I did this route in July off the back of reading reviews written here, it was my first trip to spain, wow, what a start, Harley screaming eagle, mille, varadero and a bmw k1300s in the convoy as well as me on the bird, all of us grinning like children, theres a fuel stop towards the end that is fronted by a large rockface, superb route. no corners to catch you out with good views.

Have done this road half a dozen times in each direction. It really does have a bit of everything. Its a great way to start and finish off a trip to Spain if using the Santander ferry.

My personal favourite part is going passed the wind farm. There are a couple of bar/cafes if you want to stop off on the way. Its a difficult call to make. Part of you wants to carry on riding. The other part wants to stop to gather the senses and absorb what the eyes are seeing.

Thoroughly enjoy this road.

The best wake up call youl find after rolling off the ferry in Santander.
Fantastic scenery once you get up into the mountains.
This was my girlfriends introduction to Continental biking and she loved it.
Well worth going out of your way to get to ride this road.

Rode this route 9 times on my journeys to and from Torrelvega.I live in Alicante.Every time i get to the end i want to turn round and do it again. Its just over ioo beautiful miles from start to finish so it could take 1 and half hour or more. Its almost perfect. Some lovely long undulating straights and great downhill sweeps. It all starts heading north from Burgos as you leave the N627.It might just be my favourite Spanish road...or is that the Rabassada in Barcelona!!

It´s the best road for connecting Santander-Burgos-Madrid because it´s a good and beautiful road with two good mountain roads. I recommend it.

if heading south off the ferry from Santander this road has got to be a lot more fun than any of the motorways in the area it winds its way over the Puerto de El Escudo 1011metres above sea level. Plenty of sweeping bends and a few hairpin bends to get you warmed up and a few straights so that you can pass slower moving vehicles enjoy!!

OK i know that this is the main road from Santander but this section is still well worth doing plenty of bends from sweeping curves to hairpins and a few decent straights to get passed other traffic enjoy this route instead of going by motorway

Did this road in November 05 after an extremely rough crossing to Santander that arrived 5 hours late. It was pitch black and chucking it down but as soon as we got on the 623 it was smiles all the way. Managed to get back in the daylight so could really appreciate what a fantastic piece of tarmac it is. It is definitely one of the best roads I have ever ridden.

Went there in 2000 on a tour of Spain. Took this road from Santander, to Burgos. Pulled on to the motorway no long after Burgos to get to Madrid a bit faster. This has to be the best road I have ever ridden. Both of us were grinning like Cheshire Cats at every fuel stop.

A really good selection of tight hairpins, fast sweepers and a nice view as the road rises up from sea level to around 1000m. As this is rural Spain, you may need to pay some attention to farm animals straying into the road (although I didn't see any on the way). This route is ideal if you've just got off the ferry from Santander.
